Challenge: Turn a strong travel fit into scalable growth
Opera’s international, mobile-first audience has strong travel intent, making the category a natural fit for its business. Having already worked with travel partners and established a successful desktop foundation with Expedia Group, Opera saw an opportunity to create more commercial value from the audience it already understood.
The challenge was to build on that foundation: reach more high-intent travelers beyond Opera’s owned-and-operated inventory, extend the partnership across mobile and multiple markets, and maintain the relevance and performance of the browser experience as volume scaled.
That meant coordinating activity across multiple Expedia Group brands, geographies, and devices. Localized creative, audience management, and conversion tracking all needed to work together—without audience cannibalization or broad, irrelevant impressions.
Solution: Build a strategic alliance for scale
Opera had worked with travel partners before. Expedia Group stood out because its global footprint and portfolio of travel brands matched Opera’s international audience, while the existing technical foundation between the two companies made it straightforward to layer in new initiatives.
The partnership also offered a different way of working. Rather than a standard affiliate or media-buy relationship, Opera had access to dedicated teams, shared data insights, custom user-journey testing, and rapid optimization. Together, the teams could develop experiences that added value to the browser journey while scaling existing revenue streams.
“What sets Expedia Group apart is the shift from a vendor mindset to a co-creator mindset. Standard affiliate networks are entirely transactional.
With Expedia Group, we have access to dedicated teams, shared data insights, and the ability to test custom user journeys that actually add value to the browser experience rather than disrupting it.”
Bringing first-party travel intent beyond Opera’s owned inventory
The partnership spans desktop and mobile. On desktop, Expedia Group brands appear in premium Opera placements, including Speed Dial and other high-impact browser surfaces. On mobile, the partnership combines Speed Dial with Opera Audience Extension, Opera’s proprietary DSP.
Opera Audience Extension uses first-party signals—including search behavior, navigation patterns, and travel-intent signals—to create tailored audience segments. These segments can then be activated programmatically beyond Opera’s owned inventory, extending Expedia Group’s reach across the web while maintaining first-party data precision.
Rather than relying on broad demographic proxies, the approach is designed to reach users when they are actively showing travel-purchasing intent. It combines the context of the Opera browser with the scale of audience extension.
Results: Growth with performance maintained at scale
The early performance showed the potential of the expanded model. In Q1 2026, the partnership delivered:
year-over-year GMV growth**
incremental conversions**
The model also created a cross-market learning loop: performance data and creative learnings from one geography could inform optimization in others. Delivering that required close coordination across technical, ad operations, and media-buying teams, with localized creative, audience strategy, and conversion tracking aligned across markets.
Canada emerged as a standout market, exceeding initial predictive modelling. The result reinforced the opportunity created by combining Opera’s audience profile and first-party travel-intent signals with Expedia Group’s brands and travel expertise.
For Opera, the closer strategic alliance created a path from baseline monetization to a broader growth engine. Because the companies already had a solid technical foundation together, new initiatives could be layered in without starting from scratch.
“A transactional media buy ends when the budget runs out, but a strategic alliance creates a permanent growth engine.”
